Lies, damn lies and statistics........

About sixteen years ago I was driving through one of those small forgettable North Island towns about 9.30 in the morning, I had passed the last house with the open road beckoning I planted the hoof thinking that open road sign had been removed......wrong. about three hundred metres away the long arm of the plod went up...pinged...and behind him, the much sought after open road sign.

Now sixteen years later if I were a politician to whom the alt right has taken a dislike to and were looking to smear and discredit me it would be written up like this.

“Bloggs was seen speeding in the small town of  Cowsplat known for it’s local schools, with  casual disregard for children’s lives he was eventually halted by the police where he was questioned about his lack of care.”.........now accompany this with ridicule and insults and add a few more misleading facts you have the strategy known as hosepiping.

Quite simply lying works, it is a strategy used and developed by Steve Bannon’s boot camp in Italy. Bombard with half truths, lies by omission and plan old fashioned ordinary lies mix in ridicule, conspiracy theories and insults and you have a heady brew that would take hours to fact check and pages to refute and by the time you have done that the next lot arrives.

Firehosing relies on pushing out as many lies as possible as frequently as possible. That’s typical for propaganda, but the aspect that makes firehosing a unique strategy is that it doesn’t require the propagandist to make the lies believable.

Firehosing is effective because its goal isn’t to persuade. It’s to rob facts of their power. Firehosing inundates us with so many wild opinions that it becomes exhausting to continually disprove them. In this scenario, reality is reduced to uncertainty and out of chaos comes order....their order.

Fortunately here on No Minister we can’t think of any person of alt right persuasion who uses this strategy......cough cough.

I gotta chuckle over how this case has taken off on so many tangents.
How the overpayment occurred now impinging on the integrity of public service when silly me thought it was about who leaked the information to the media.

If it any consolation your Lordship I always a scroll quickly through Gravedogger, Tom Hunter and Adolfs attempts a humour.

What was that old saying Gerald? Ah yes loose lips sink ships.

If pollies freely disseminate "in confidence" information glad we're not on a war footing.

Gerald ... your 7.16. Surely Jacinda doesn't gossip ... does she.

For the record I think Anne Tolley telling her sister was stupid indeed. Interesting though that she volunteered that information herself. It did not come from team Peters. But even more chilling for me was the information that 40 bureaucrats know of the details either in whole or in part.

Egbut ... your last para. Do you honestly think this is limited to the alt right?

In my day if a baggy arse clerk was to gossip about "in confidence' material regardless if it was unclassified he would have been subject to a charge.

I thought we covered that ?

Noel ... thank you for that link. Hadn't picked up on it. Interesting, particularly the assertion by counsel acting for the Crown that 'The possibility of Mr Peters' over-payment coming out in the public domain had never been ruled out and could not be. It would be naive to say this could never happen.'
