THE VETERAN

My very good friend Adolf Fiinkensein (in real life descended from Te Ika o te Waruki and related to General Sir Duncan Cameron, Commander of the Imperial Forces in NZL from 1861-65 ... thought 'you' would want to know that) has reminded me that it is coming up to ten years since I, with some small trepidation, accepted his invitation to become a contributor to the No Minister blog.    I think I have authored some 1450 posts ... some good, some bad, some indifferent.   I guess beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder.

I enjoy the cut and thrust of discussion and that's how it should be.   I particularly enjoy the contributions from those on the other side of the political divide who take me to task ... Psycho Milt's and Lord Egbut's especially.   Snowflake's patronising drivel NOT.   And I also enjoy Andrei's contributions coming, as they do, from a different perspective.

I know NM is monitored by Beehive Press Officer staff (as most blogs are) and it's interesting to receive direct feedback from both Cabinet Ministers and MPs past and present.   I should wonder how they know my private e-mail address but I don't.    It's also great to receive feedback from the likes of 'Pablo' and other luminaries and I'm encouraged when someone takes the trouble to contact me and say how much they enjoy reading my posts.   My inevitable response ... well how about participating on-line then ... their inevitable reply ... nah, that's not me.

Those of you who know me in real life will be aware that I was looking forward to retirement and getting my golf handicap back down to where it should be when my warrant expired back in August.   Alas that was not to be as the government, in one of its very strange decisions, decided to reappoint me through until the next election.   So, I'm very much 'on the road' again doing God's work with blogging a secondary consideration.   Still, it's said that 'only the good die young' and on that basis you haven't seen the last of me.  Hope so anyway.

Cheers

I think they did Gerald.....he was a spectacularly unsuccessful General and if it hadn't been the appointment of Sir George Grey as the new Governor of NZ he would have lost all 3,000 troops in the invasion of the Waikato.

Congrats Vet. How does it feel to be the only adult blogging here?

And Lance Corporal Legbut, who cannot name one military (or political) campaign in which he participated on the winning side, pours scorn on a highly decorated and successful British general.
