ON JANE FONDA

Related image I see Jane Fonda is to visit New Zealand on a speaking tour.

I doubt whether many Vietnam veterans will be opening up their wallets in order to hear her.

The 1972 picture of her in the gun-aimer's seat of of a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft artillery piece complete with steel helmet defines Fonda for many of us.

Much on a par with John Amery and William Joyce.

I never saw her any differently than the Auckland University student who was dragging muck from the gutters to throw on my uniform in 1971.
Sure in another age she would have been charged with treason but that age was long dead by 1972.

I know you were there, so your views are coloured by the propaganda that lead you to war and your recollections clouded by the fog of war, but at least Fonda had the courage of her convictions to go against received wisdom and stand for what was right.

The horror of Vietnam, a war built on lies, deceit, and fearmongering.

Noel, what causes more harm, mud on a uniform that can be washed off. or napalm?

This photo defines Jane Fonda for others of us. Depends what you were focused on at the time, I guess.

Whatever David but it was a protest for nothing. In June 1972 when I was there everyone was pulling out so it didn't hasten anything.
You believe what you want of the war and I'll remember the ARVN I knew and were buried in their cemetery which the North destroyed.

You believe what you want and I'll remember the millions of Vietnamese, Laotians, and Cambodians, killed in their own countries, for wanting nothing more than the right to self determination and freedom from colonial overlords.

What threat did they pose to your, your family, or your nation, that you felt you had the right to thwart their dreams? You were nothing but an insignificant cog in a vast killing machine. I don't know that I could ever live with that on my conscience.

And not forgetting John Kerry.

They didn't pose any threat to me. Did to the South Vietnamese though.

You do protest every time your country sends its forces overseas?

When the expression of interest for a posting to South Vietnam appears on the unit notice board I did as much research as I could with the information available then, including "Street without Joy".

Then you bought the propaganda. North, South, all Vietnamese, all had been oppressed by China, France, Japan, France again, and finally the Americans, although China did try once more.

You do protest every time your country sends its forces overseas?

Yes, when it does so for the wrong reasons. When the invasion of a foreign land is based on lies such as led to our involvement in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, etc. When we send an armed force to attack another country we are in the wrong, no matter what justifications the politicians may come up with.

The lie that began a war.

Been in the KoolAid again, Adolf? Let us compare your record with Kerry's shall we?

I'm sure you were Secretary of State in some tin pot dictatorship somewhere. Maybe you carried Idi Amin's bags for him, a man after your own heart.

David, You're off topic because this thread is about the Vietnam War era. However, I'll put up my record for honesty and loyalty against that of your dear treasonous bullshitting buffoon and friend John Kerry any day.

David said...

If I am off topic, then WTF was your reference to Kerry about? Kerry is no friend of mine, but I can understand why you don't like him because he was a bit less of an authoritarian than your preferred "leaders".

So Adolt, how about YOU stay on topic and debate the merits of the issue at hand?

George said...

Kerry is and was a liar.
Claimed to be somewhere one Christmas on his boat where no navigable water exists.
And we wont mention the self awarded Purple Heart.
As an exserviceman I hold ALL exservicemen in high regard for their service.
And David and his ilk?
Beneath contempt !

Adolf Fiinkensein said...

David, are you really thick, or do you simply pretend to be a moron?

David said...

And you want to lecture me about being off topic? Jesusonalollipopstick Adolf.

How about showing some respect for Veteran and not clogging his post with your bullshit?

Adolf Fiinkensein said...

And there is David , with the ultimate projection.

And fuck I'm glad we've left those ages behind us. The fact that you can in recent times object to your government deciding to send its soldiers off to put holes in some Third World country's peasantry without getting your collar felt and possibly your neck stretched could be classed as a minor miracle, if it hadn't been hard-won at the cost of a lot of lives. Long may those freedoms remain in existence.

David ... I have no problem with 'legitimate' protest. Indeed, a close colleague of mine who was decorated for his gallantry in Vietnam later marched actively against our involvement. He has my respect for that.

Fonda has none ... Daddy's poor little rich girl. What she did crossed the line and for that she has my has my utter contempt.

Can't you just see the sickening mags and Herald splashing pictures of Hanoi Jane and socialist Cindy.

David said...

Veteran, no doubt your contempt for Fonda is similar to mine for those who will invade nations on a bed of lies. Not one war since 1945 has led to an improvemnt in the lives of those being "saved".

Spot on. Smarmy self promoting bitch. Nothing to do with the Vietnamese (north or south ) She knew the media would fall all over.

By the way she was a pretty ordinary actress.
