The Gender Police

Audrey Young writes about the rumour-mongering re Clarke Gayford:

Ardern will have the sympathy of every party in Parliament and all but the most stone-hearted MP.

That makes her calculated reference to "dirty politics" in her statement unfair on National.

As she well knows, 'dirty politics' is no longer a generic phrase, but was the title of the Nicky Hager book about some low-life operatives associated with the former government.

Ardern has no reason to cast a slur on the National Party by innuendo.

I know, right? It's so unfair!  You run one dirty-politics operation out of the Prime Minister's office, and when something like that happens again people just assume it's you.

The rumours themselves are a reminder of how NZ blokedom involves some seriously ugly shit. I won't risk a defamation case by pointing to the details, but you can get an idea of what they were about from this post and comments thread on Whaleoil

This comment certainly took me back to my school days:

We didn't call him Gay Clarkeford for nothing at school.

How well I remember those guys and the vigorous, malicious intensity of their gender policing!  What delight they took in identifying supposed markers of homosexuality in their fellow pupils and dwelling on them at every opportunity! Oh, what times they were!

What shit times they were, actually.  Being someone never much concerned with conforming to masculine gender stereotypes myself, I heard plenty from these guys when I was at school, and one of the things I liked best about leaving school was that I'd never be required to associate with such toxic personalities again. Their contempt for women, preference for the company of men and constant vigilance against signs of homosexuality always made me wonder if they were trying to persuade themselves of something.  It's depressing to see them still in action 40 years later, but I guess some things never go away.

On the plus side, smears from the right that assume calling someone gay or transgender is a deadly insult are likely to do the right far more harm than good these days.  Please by all means do continue it, and please do make clear your support for National in among the smears. The left thanks you for your cooperation in this matter.

Now that whatever it was that only media and the posters know is officially unsubstantiated can someone please repeat the allegations on social media so we can have a test case in the courts.

Summed it up well, Noel.

PM, whilst I agree with the sentiment in your post, I still have a niggling feeling Gayford may be a little responsible for the attack. He has milked being the first handbag carrier more than any other life partner previously.

Gotta love Milt's nuclear grade hypocrisy: decrying the baseless rumour spreading about Gayford and simultaneously spreading a thinly veiled slur that somehow the Nats are behind it.

The fact of the matter is that most people on the street haven't heard anything about the rumours until the MSM started pumping them. Up until then it was restricted to random dickheads on the internet.

The Nats have nothing to gain by being behind it.

Oh, I doubt National was behind it - much too risky for any of them to be involved, post-Hager. Looks like it was just enthusiastic amateurs indulging their gender-police obsessions.

Couldn't resist the "you run one dirty politics operation out of the PM's office" crack, though - that shit's never going to get old.

Expect you are right about the first part but not the second. I'd say it was amateurish wankers having a crack at Jacinda indirectly and nothing much at all to do with Gayford or gender.

Judging by the reaction, I wouldn't be surprised if it all, whatever it is, turns out to be true.

Stay classy Adolt, you petty, vicious pin-headed shit for brains Tory wanker.

I wouldn't be surprised if all the rumours about John Key, whatever they were, turned out to be true (well, possibly not the one about him representing the interests of the lizard people, but all of the others). That gets us where, exactly?

The thing is that if you don't have those toxic views about gender, there's nothing to have a crack at.

Milt

What would those toxic views' about gender be?

Snowflake said...

Yeah Milt, you pussy. You obviously have a problem with not being as manly as Adolt, and therefore not a real man. Get hard, loser. Gay Clarkeford has the same issues as does Peter Davis. At High School, Adolt was a big man who used to flush heads like yours down the toilet. Best days of his life. After than he became an insurance salesman and things just went down hill a bit, but hey still got those memories right?

Milt, I don't think the rumours had anything to do with gender. Gender's no longer a particularly salacious gossip item, you know.

Think about it. If the rumours were regarding gender, why would the police commissioner feel the need (pressure?) to step in and state that Gayford wasn't under investigation for anything? Police don't investigate gender issues.

I'd never really noticed anything about this until Labour decided to drag it into the sunlight and make it mainstream. I think they should have just ignored it and it would have gone away like countless other baseless rumours.

As Barely Sober writes, Labour have simply made this into a thing. More fool them.

Johno......have you even read the planted stories on unsocial media? No, I thought not.
Pretty sneaky how you you have managed to turn it around and blame Labour for dirty politics and you are quite wrong, the police do investigate gender issues if they suspect a crime has been committed........with your line of reasoning we can look forward to the Nats imploding in year or two.

Meanwhile, over at the cesspool, Whaleoil has made it all about him. Looks like just another fool.

The rumours weren't only about gender, there were allegations of illegal activity as well. However, my interest for this post is in the gender-based ones.

It's in the post. But if you have a read through those Whaleoil comments, have a think about the views on gender that might prompt commenters to refer to Gayford as a ladyboy, or (worse) to imply that Jacinda Ardern could be a trans-woman (and regarding that one, see also the various "Michelle Obama is a man" alt-right memes and ask yourself what it tells you about the attitudes to gender of the people involved).

Adolf Fiinkensein said...

Milt

No I tend not to read comments at Whaleoil and as far as 'gender' insults are concerned, you people on the left simply are reaping that which you have sown.

David said...

yes, you're right, Adolf. We have been horrid.

How dare we advocate for women being autonomous individuals with the right to control their own bodies. We should be shamed and pilloried for not standing up for the rights for men to grab pussies and feel entitled to sex. Expecting equality and dignity for LGBTQI people is just so fascist. And actually teaching kids about sex and contraception? oooh boy, we'll surely be damned to hell for that one, stopping all those teenage sluts from getting pregnant and being punished.

I'm aware there's a school of thought out there that women brought hatred on themselves by rejecting the roles men felt they should have, gays brought hatred on themselves by declaring themselves publicly etc, but that school of thought is a crock of shit.

Not if you’re Adolt, Milt. It’s just the sort of identity politics the world needs. MAGA!

Its a sad day when a non event becomes news because of a non event.

So there's a rumour about someone (I don't actually know what the rumour is), but the Police come out and say there's nothing in it, and presumably lawyers are sitting ready to sue anyone who repeats the rumours.
Not a great strategy for making the issue go away.
