IT WOULD NEVER OCCUR, DR PIE RAIDER DOESN"T EVEN UNDERSTAND HISTORY

If any proof was needed and those who have followed her long march to Ministerial Rank already know, Dr Meg 'Woodnt have a clue' displayed just how large the gulf of ignorance as to how business functions is for her. Almost as large as he current dress size

A doctorate in History and her penchant for using the affectation outside of academia leaves the poor woman bereft of any understanding of the daily reality, financial outcomes have for a business to remain functioning.

So, a suspected lefty minion stole an internal email from BP HQ to its regional managers on how to respond to falling market share in the Otaki region.
I know that there are some serious price competitive activities in play with pump prices across the nation and they only really surface when Gull, Waitomo, Nelson Petroleum and Oamaru based  Mckeowns  cause angst for the pie shops that sell petrol and diesel often as a sideline.
The only bit of the current setup around BP and its being hauled into a meeting with the Minister, for a slapping might come from their Pie retailing. Clearly her knowledge of marketing, margins and profitability across their now extensive product range, are all a complete mystery.

Having been involved in the introduction of a tax grab that has all the hallmarks of going nation wide, of around 25 cents per liter, to now shed Crocodile tears over a price discrepancy not even close to that which triggered her showboating, just makes her hypocrisy all the more obvious.

The first object for BP comes from making a profit just to remain in the market, clearly Shell didn't want to remain in such a small country trying to support the many outlets under the evolved systems still the mainstay across NZ.

Truck stops and unmanned card pumps are increasingly the way forward.

My last Invoice from McKeowns has 240 liters of diesel for $250 Including a card renewal of nearly $10,  while current pump prices for city diesel are now over $2.50 a liter.

Of course the PhD in History will never be buying a liter of dirty diesel, discounted or full retail so she will never even have that opportunity to learn the basics of marketing thereby revealed.
I wonder if  when BP decide the government threats and bullying are not worth the trouble and  thousands of their employees get a dcm along with directions to the nearest welfare office, would that reach past the cloth ears.
Probably not!

Where on earth do you live?
You write something relating to a New Zealand Minister and in it talk about
"while current pump prices for city diesel are now over $2.50 a liter"
Current pump prices for diesel are nothing like $2.50/litre, or at least they aren't anywhere near Wellington where I live.
$1.44 or so would be the number.

I don't know how many times I have to explain this, but yet again, it's a title. She's not "Mrs" Megan Wood or "Miss" Megan Wood or "Ms" Megan Wood, any more than John Key is "Mr" John Key. You may not like her title, but that's not her problem.

A breakdown this morning on Whaleoil from the NZ taxpayers Union on the cost of petrol. Something like 45% is tax.

Fuck me, I use my title Doctor outside of academia, too. As a woman it's especially handy to get a bit more bloody respect, especially among male peers. Maybe I shouldn't be so uppity.

I always liked the way that titles were used by the Author and translator of a textbook we used many years ago when I was studying Physics.
The translator listed himself as being MA(Hons), PhD. Most impressive.
The actual author, who had written the book in German, didn't bother with such trivia as mere degrees.
He was simply listed as being FRS, Nobel Laureate

Milt with respect, a suggestion your Wood and her PhD had any relevance to Economics, Politics, Business, Energy or even socialist dogma and I wood concede her affectatious use of title in matters such as her bullying BP.
"Dr"? it was in History!!

Just as Dr Davy Boy Clark as Minister of health uses his Docterate designation when it was I think awarded in Divinity, gives seriously misleading indications he might have a smigeon of knowledge around matters medical amongst those bereft of such ivory tower thinking that is a fact of life within the proletariat

The Hon Jonathon Coleman as Minister of health was actually a freekin Dr who might just have been of assisstance in treatment of an ingrown toe nail but was rarely referred to as "Dr" Coleman.

Some of the more obscure often narrow field of study that can lead to a PhD leaves it rather self aggrandising when using the "doctor label" away from the lofty tower inhabited by the self perpetrating elite.

And the whole charade is funded by tax paying working people to a rather munificent degree that gives no such nomenclature to their plebian existence.

Your defence, narrow as it is, in no way detracts from her explicit ignorance around the whole matter so wholesomly exposed when any review is indulged in, apart from her very far left socialist attempt to be seen "doing something", which the moronic media tried to portray as meaningful.

Phd indeed more like Pffft!

Farkinell - I get all pedantic about her title and then spell her name wrong. Apologies to Dr Woods.

Er, yes. A doctorate of philosophy is awarded for scholarly achievement and applies to history as much as it does to physics or any other scholarly pursuit.

Well, yes, a great many people are woefully ignorant. That isn't David Clark's fault. And Coleman's title of "Dr" is an honorary one given to medical doctors as a mark of respect, not because they're actual doctors, so it's not all that surprising if he doesn't use it.

If the use of titles bothers you, a much richer field for ridicule would be the country's many "Sirs," most of whom were awarded the title as a pay-off from their cronies in government. At least people with PhDs did something to earn their title.

That the Minister has a doctorate in History does not alter the essence of the post. The issue is that this Government has cranked up the taxation on fuel in a region well above any perceived charging misdemeanour in the Ministers mind. This grubby act may spread as various LG plunderers of the taxpayers wallet see the opportunity.

The tax is a larger part of the problem Minister. The tax being taken on fuel for road use is being siphoned of for non reading matters. I do not regard cycle ways or commuter subsidies as matters I wish to pay tax on when purchasing fuel. The District I live in does not even get the equivalent of RUC back for roading work, that the fuel tax is such a rort, now a larger rort, reflects no glory on this government.

I share the view that kicking BP.in the shins was a media diversion attempt from their government move in facilitating the increased tax rort on fuel for road users.

I am always amused by the people that insist being called Doctor in general because the have a PhD. I work with a number of people with Doctorates. They are in real subjects like Engineering. Not one of them lists their title anywhere - even in official publications or on their business cards or email signatures. It is also interesting to note that both Nick Smith and Lockwood Smith never seemed to refer to themselves as Doctor, or insisted that others do.
I suspect that Ms Woods has a major inferiority complex. Here mannerisms in interviews suggest that she likes talking down to people she regards as intellectually inferior, i.e. everyone else.

Yes, I too worked with a number of people with doctorates in teal disciplines such as livestock nutrition and entomology. They had special business cards printed for visits to Aisa. These cards carried the appellation 'Dr' because it was expected in those countries. Their 'western' business cards did not because such was considered an affectation exclusive to socialists.

Most, maybe all those I know personally who have been knighted prefer not to be adressed as Sir.

Then there is another Pffft who was awarded a Doctorate in history, then accepted with unseemly alacrity the cronyism you suggest around becoming a "Sir" and now stalks working peasants with how many, just count the ways, to extort ever more taxation demands from those plebians.
Of course while that Pffft in hypocrisy apparently went along with his dear leader for nine long years who wanted such colonial links canned and instituted a series of meaningless lettered adjuncts awarded to many good comrades for just doing the job they were well paid to do.

It must have been galling for socialists everywhere that so many of the ruling elite have rushed off to become Dames and Knights at investitures where they fawn and bend their Knee to the royals and their deputies they claim they will end when the glorious Republic is forced on the orrible people who sustain their elevated status.
Sir Trev the Muss and his current squeeze Lady Jane await such elevation I suspect.

So what? A quick Google of Dr Nick Smith shows plenty of news reports referring to him as "Dr Smith," because that's his fucking title. I doubt he rang up those news outlets to insist that they call him "Dr Smith," just like I doubt Megan Woods has called up any news outlets to insist that they call her "Dr Woods." That's because journos know what a title is and they use it when referring to the recipients.

Most, maybe all those I know personally who have been knighted prefer not to be adressed as Sir.

Big whoop. If the news media refers to them, it will call them "Sir Whoeverthefuck," regardless of whatever personal preferences they might express to individuals they're having conversations with, because that's their title and journos know what a title is.

If you've met Megan Woods and she insisted on you addressing her as Dr Woods, by all means lampoon her affectation. However, if all you've seen is journos calling her Dr Woods, pull your head in - it's part of their job to call her Dr Woods, just like it was part of their job to call Nick Smith Dr Smith and just like it's part of their job not to refer to "Mr Key."

Well, yeah - New Zealand society has long considered intelligence to be an embarrassing character flaw to be concealed to the extent possible. It's nothing to be proud of.

As an aside: people who use the word "real" when discussing abstract concepts like academic disciplines either lack understanding of what the word "real" means, or lack understanding of what "abstract concepts" mean. Sadly not an affliction exclusive to right-wingers.

Actually Psycho - it happen when Ms Woods was doing one of those "fact finding" tours as an Opposition MP. She corrected Mike in a pompous tone with us in earshot. The funny thing was he also has a PhD, but he was too polite to mention it. He also dresses in jeans and check shirts, even though he probably earns more than her, so she treated him as a pleb.

Is that so? Reminds me of when we were out drinking and Simon Bridges said that if we could catch one of those sheep he'd fuck it. Ah, good times.

Here is the Minister talking about energy in bit of a car crash interview. She talks flat out, using all the buzzwords (even channeling Donald Rumsfeld at one stage), but cannot answer any questions about actual numbers or even details about the effects of the Government's policies.

And wrong again Psycho. I have met and talked to Simon Bridges when he was Minister of Energy. I wasn't that impressed with his understanding of the subject.

Psycho Milt said...

Yeah, it's almost as though the nation's voters don't elect politicians based on their expertise in particular sectors, or something. Count your blessings - a cabinet minister who's worked in something connected with their portfolio and thinks that makes them an expert on the subject is a disaster waiting to happen. They don't need expertise, that's what we have a public service for.

Anonymous said...

No Psycho - the problem is that the public service has become so compromised that they don't have the expertise or understanding on many of the technical subjects. Read the Electricity Grid rules. There is one sentence on actual electricity generators but over twenty pages on how to get lawyers involved with payment disputes! It also extends to the Quangos. Look at the Electricity Authority - they are all economists! The Government departments get all these expert reports done by consultants, but they choose the people that will give them the answer they want.
But going back to the problem with Ministers. Too many of the people in Cabinets in recent decades have no understanding of their portfolios. Energy has always been a dumping ground for the less gifted. The ministers have no REAL experience outside political life and academia. Having a casual conversation with them show they don't understand even fundamental issues at any greater depth than a tee shirt slogan. The flunkies that accompany them are chosen for political views, not competence. They also cannot relate to things outside their social circles. They cannot talk in real terms - it is all "starting conversations" and "getting the framework in place". It is a trend that is getting worse and Ms Woods is a prime example.
