THE MAORI OPTION

TV is being saturated with adverts calling on Maori to exercise their vote on the Maori option ... to go on the Maori on General roll.

The adverts are heavily saturated with Maori symbolism with a subliminal message that if you are Maori you should vote on the Maori roll.

Wonder why ... can it just be the Labour holds all the Maori seats?

No matter then that the majority of Maori choose to register on the General roll.

I doubt it. Labour would be better off if some of the people on the Māori roll changed their registration to the general roll - some National-held electorates might become marginal if that happened. Wouldn't affect the overall number of seats held by each party, but the symbolism would be significant.

PM ... fair comment but you and I both know that it won't happen with Labour in power.
Their Maori caucus would be revolting as they are.

Right on the money. Where is the accompanying campaign to get the equally idle Pakeha and others to get on an electoral roll. Probably better not to encourage the ferals to vote.

They did that in the run up to the last election - this is not about getting people onto the roll, it is about giving people the opportunity to change the roll they are already on and it is related to the census and the redrawing of electoral boundaries that will follow on from the census data

Andrei, So what. Surely it applies to all to ensure they are on an electorate roll. Maori had the same opportunity prior to the last election as well.

No Shelldrake they didn't have the option to change roll. If they were not on the roll already they could choose but if they were already registered roll they couldn't change the roll they were registered on

It all has to do with drawing the electoral boundaries from the census data for both the Maori and General seats

Its not hard Sheldrake. We just had a census, the next in five years and a year after that Maori will be again invited to register.
