GOBSMACKED

I've been a JP for nigh on thirty years.    This morning a received a phone call from someone who wanted me to witness a document.

Said I was happy to do so and that my address was .........

The caller said .... 'no, I need you to come to me because I can't make it into town today and anyway, I don't have any transport'.    I said we don't do house calls.    His response was that we were there to provide a service and that he was 'entitled' to that service and that's what we were paid to do and that's what he paid taxes for.

I wasn't going to get into an argument with him nor attempt to disabuse him of the notion that JPs are paid so I said I can't help you and put the phone down.

Some muvvers do have em ... and on my birthday too.

David - it is rude to shout at Blog hosts - especially on their birthday.

Enjoy the day Vet.

Many happy returns, Vet. Are you going to have a night out 'on the ribs' with your dear lady wife?

Sorry PDM, wasn't shouting, was talking loudly so the elderly could hear me. :-)

Sentiment remains the same.

Happy birthday Vet. Am about to ship out of Auckalofa to Taupo for a boys' Wairakei golf weekend. Am feeling like it is my birthday too!

Whats a bet he doesn't pay taxes anyway. Reminded me of when I was a party candidate which led a caller to insist I was duty bound to listen to her whinging ad nauseam because I wanted to be a member of parliament. Happy Birthday :-)

LM Same thing crossed my mind. Them as moans about taxes doesn't usuaally pay 'em.

Forgive my ignorance but I thought JP work was unpaid. A staunch socialist aquaintance who is in favor of the South African land confiscation and is a JP is always saying so and I'd like to know. He was a friend but his politics eventually got in the way.

Funny dat, but its always the self righteous Right who complain about paying tax and want to pay none! Us socialists see paying tax as a duty and a public good. We like the idea of funding public infrastructure, schools, hospitals, age pensions, etc., and yes, Lindsay, we also believe that the "Welfare State" is sustainable, provided those who owe tax pay tax and not dodge and rort the system.

I doubt that you have a "staunch socialist aquaintance (sic)" who was ever in favour of the colonial land grabs in Africa.

WWJD?

Just for the record JPs are not allowed to accept any payment for their efforts, though I deal with a fair number of country people who offer various items.
I always make that clear but if they insist on giving the whitebait etc to my wife, no problem.
On occasion I do go to the clients but there has to be a real reason for that.

Yeah yeah yeah. Just like that staunch socialist Metiria Turei? And all her Greens mates who did pension fund rorts with their parliamentary accommodation to avoid paying tax?

If you do some homework you will find that in the USA, Republcans give more to charity than to Democrats by a huge margin.

Veteran ...Congratulations for making it thus far. There was couple of occasions in the past where today might have been a memorial day.

I do wish the pretender would leave the whaderboutery alone for for five minutes.

Egbut ... thank you for that. Have always been comforted by the fact that only the good die young. Received a raft of greetings from the old mob including Robbie Dil from North Carolina. Your second sentence was a tad close to the mark on 22 Jul 68 when we hit that bunkered position I had to call down arty fire on top of us and Robbie got too close to an RPG. Thank God for a brave Dustoff pilot under fire.

Can I just say on a personal not how much I value your contributions. We don't agree often (except on Trump and Putin) but keep on keeping on.
