ON JIM ANDERTON

I only enjoyed a passing acquaintance with Jim Anderton but he was someone from the political diaspora that I would have happily enjoyed a beer with even though we would probably have to agree to disagree on many issues.

He was a political animal and a 'Labour' man through and through who stood by his principles and nothing like the Labour politicians of today who are mostly of the ersatz variety.    For a quarter of a century plus Jim Anderton was Sydenham/Wigram and Sydenham/Wigram was Jim Anderton.

He was prepared to walk away from his own Party where he had been both President and a Member of Parliament on a point of principle but the electorate stood by him so much so that In the 1993 election and standing for New Labour he achieved a bigger majority (7,476) than when he was first elected as the Labour member to replace John Kirk (7,255) and this despite Labour standing their own candidate who polled a respectable 4,990 votes.

Jim Anderton was autocratic.   It was his way or the highway as a number of MPs in both Labour and the Alliance Party would testify.    Nevertheless he was, by any measure, a successful politician who leaves behind him a legacy ... Kiwibank ... that no-one can take away from him.

RIP Jim Anderton.

For me he will always be the only one in Labour who was not just willing to point out Emperor Roger Douglas had no clothes on, but to actually do something about it. That took some big fucking bollocks, and of course his Labour colleagues who lacked the courage of their convictions (or just lacked convictions) hated him for it. As you say though, the voters certainly didn't hate him for it. That's what I'll remember him for.

PM ... it was not just Emperor Roger of course ... Clark, Goff, Prebble et al.

I once approached Jim in his Selwyn St surgery about a small problem I was having with a utility company recently purchased by an American consortium. The company in question was using bullyboy tactics and driving a coach and horses through the privatisation and competition legislation set up to give small firms a level playing field.

He asked the right questions and was incensed when he read the examples I provided and over a period of time made a difference with his persistence. He later confided that the inertia in pursuing this company through the Commerce commission came from the highest levels of Govt (National) because of financial leverage......Neo liberalism??

If only they made pollies like that today.

Ah, the eulogy that redeems a man just because he's dead.

You either like him because he was a trougher you agreed with or don't much care if you have the opposite view. I think his attempted manipulation of the Anglicans over their cathedral in Christchurch was appalling and that is just as much a measure of the man being an intrusive twit with no respect for property rights as anything else he might have done as he sucked off the public tit for much of his life.

Being an excellent hard line lefty as he was I don't see any reason to treat him with less contempt in death than in life. He cost NZ a fortune with little to show for it for such a supposed successful businessman. He's not alone in that of course but I found him particularly annoying.

Anon 3:16......And I find anonymous posts without substance particularly annoying.......in fact, as you never met him and had absolutely nothing to do with him in your wasted life span you it's just trolling. It's useless pricks like you trolling from the sidelines about things you know nothing about give me the screaming abdabs.

So what? Be annoyed all you like. I simply find hard lefties annoying because their continued defence of a failed ideology is annoying.

Hi Adolf, how's your grandad?

I'm with 3:16.

Like all the other socialist boondoggles, Kiwibank is a drain on the government books. It doesn't provide the return on capital a private company would require for its shareholders and yet it is considered a success? Why the hell would we as taxpayers want to be involved in banking?

It requires more capital to operate than it has and is only given an A credit rating due to a government guarantee. This actually shows how poorly Kiwibank performs. In theory if it performed well it would have the same credit rating as New Zealand.

What the socialists don't understand is that Kiwibank places further strain on the government accounts (i.e. taxpayers) that will be called on at the worst possible time. That's Jamdertins legacy that we will not thank him for in the future.

3.16 ... it would be churlish indeed not to acknowledge Anderton's contribution to the nation and yes, he did many things I disagreed with including his lobbying for the restoration of the Christchurch Cathedral.

Fact remain I could happily enjoy a beer with him ... something I could never do with Helen Clark (even if she drank beer).

Veteran..and why could you not sit down with Helen and have a G+T and discuss politics, cabbages and Kings.....I have a feeling that you you would welcome the social intercourse. You would be fool to do otherwise.

Gold, pure gold and a total lack of self awareness from one who clings to fairy tales, lies, and bullshit.

Perhaps Ghybern knew more than Americans about spelling his own name.

Here are some other sources who don’t bseem to have a problem getting the name right.

I see they have sent in the attack dogs. Demean, demonise, laugh at, then insult usually using American English but never any workable links......just fuck off back to you minimum wage job Ivan. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Research_Agency

The disruptor trolls job is to destroy working blogs by breaking the the chain of discourse. Insulting or guiding the blog away from the original subject. This is to create uncertainty, particularly when it comes to our institutions, Justice, political system and defence. NZ is the bottom of the food chain for these people but they are still there and can call up resources to deal with any inconvenient blogger.

This what they are capable of when set loose..... https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/dec/02/fake-news-botnets-how-russia-weaponised-the-web-cyber-attack-estonia
