While reading the biography of US president Harry Truman I came upon the most superb retort from a man of considerable wit. It was during the run up to the UN discussions on the establishment of a Jewish state. Truman was being harassed by voluminous and hyperbolic representations from America's Jewish community.
In a fit of frustration he remarked:-
"Jesus Christ couldn't please them when he was here on earth so how does anyone expect that I would have any luck?"
Now that's straight talkin'!

Good quote, but I can't find it...reference please.
Sorry mate. No anonymous comments thanks. Read the biography and after about seven hours, you'll find it.
Nice quote but apocryphal.

Anonymous, a simple 5 second google search will find 1000s of references to the quote.
fred2. So I guess the biography I'm reading is just fake news, printed in 1977?
Idiot!
workingman. I would be very grateful if you would kindly give me a cite to this particular quote. Despite your assertion that a 5 second qoogle search would find 1000s of references to it I have spent, at least, 1 hour combing the internet for it but have not found 1 reference to it. 1000s of HST's quotations, yes, but not 1 of this particular quote. So, be a sport and direct me to it. Thanks.
fred2
Put up the quote and the only site it goes to is......wait for it Doggers Post
Put up the quote with Truman and the only site it goes to is ...Doggers Post.
fred2 and Gerald
Clearly you don't know how to use google. I tried it and after a few seconds had at least six different links to the quote.
So which biography were you reading?
The biography written by Donovan.
Here's another from the same period.
"Truman had bluntly explained his motivation: "I'm sorry, gentlemen, but I have to answer to hundreds of thousands who are anxious for the success of Zionism. I do not have hundreds of thousands of Arabs among my constituents."
Marshall who was against said politics should be kept out of it.
Your'e right Adolf if you put Donovan before the quote and search you go right there.
Given there's probably a hundred biographies on Truman if Dogger had provided that at the outset Gerald and Fred2 would have got in the first search.
Hold it how does Adolf know what Doggers reading?
In fact when I googled I didn't use the word 'Donovan.' Using the whole quote is a bit silly - just three or four key words is all that is needed.
