Self Radicalised?

In their latest effort to spin Islamic terrorism as 'nothing to do with Islam, Victorian police describe the perpetrators of Christmas murder and mayhem in Melbourne as 'self radicalised.'

I'm trying to figure out how this 'self radicalisation' business works.

Did they all experience the same message from Allah in a dream one night?   Did they not find support and encouragement for their blood-thirsty plans in the words of the Quran and the preaching from their respective mosques?

Were all those 600,000 nice chaps who voluntarily joined the Waffen SS during the 1940s also self radicalised?

Full marks to the AFP, ASIO and Victorian police for grabbing these fellows but when, oh when, will they call a spade a spade?

"Self-radicalised"just means the perps decided on their own that they fancied the idea of being murdering fascists, rather than having to be talked into it by a righteous and community-minded "man of God." All good - their decision can be taken into account at sentencing.

Really good warning sign you should note in this one.

You mean this piece Noel?
"When individuals communicate online, and especially when they are anonymous, their communicative behavior can become more aggressive, and the attitudes they express can be more extreme."

Noel, you prove the point I am making. There is no such thing as genuine self radicalisation. These people allow themselves to be radicalised by OTHER PEOPLE using the internet. Funny how they ALL seem to be Muslim.

I don't recall Jack van Tongeren being a Muslim. Nor was Levon Demirian. I suspect both are xtians.

Peter James Knight is a radicalised xtian. He's still got 9 years of 23 year non parole to serve.

Bosco Boscovich and Maya Catts are not, to the best of my knowledge, Muslims.

Funny how so few of the actual terror attacks in Australia are carried out by Muslims.

But you keep jumping at shadows while the next Martin Bryant is loading his guns...

David you beat me to it.
Interesting pie chart in this one.
Some are predicting a return home grown others as ISIS effect reduces.

If you are not religious this self radicalization makes no sense but if you are its easy to understand. As a Christian I read the Bible most days and study it by using commentaries and other resources to make sense of the message as may be required. This increases understanding and constantly leads to positions being questioned to ensure I make the best progress I can. This also allows discernment of what is preached and read to filter out nonsense or challenge it.

Muslims can do the same but their downfall is that the teachings progress in a manner that supports this violent behaviour because the teachings are violent. The more one takes the Quran seriously the more likely one is going to act like in the manner that we are seeing.

The result is that I look in the mirror and see someone who is slightly flawed and I vow to try harder to be ethical, kind and compassionate etc ... because its is reasonably expected of me as my response to Jesus of Nazareth. There is no political motive in this. The Muslim sees someone who is not conquering the world as quickly as expected so tries harder to do so because until he or she does the political kingdom will not be complete and the big Muslim boss will stay away. You can be governed by Islam or reject it using whatever means are required. There is no middle ground - tolerating it will be the end of the west.

Adolf it doesnt prove your point.
"The self is the idea of a unified being which is the source of consciousness. Moreover, this self is the agent responsible for the thoughts and actions of an individual to which they are ascribed."
You may get away with making the internet contacts guilty of the thoughts but the actions are self. Hence the classification.

PM has it about right although you may debate the fascist bit. If reports are right then it's Islamic terrorist wannabees. Of course there will be any number who would want to downplay that angle ... they're here on this thread.

Tried, convicted and sentanced all in in 20 minutes....well done lads.

Only two out of every 10 terrorism charges result in a conviction (UK stats). Some times the police over react in the interest of public safety and I don't blame them. There are so many examples of shoot first (not literally) and investigate later. Although the media report on a terrorism conviction what they don't tell you is that 10% are convicted of non terrorism offences that come to light ie. stolen goods etc.

Don't pre-empt the judicial system as that way lays unfulfilled expectations and social disharmony.

Sorry mistake......for "two out of every 10 terrorism charges" should read "terrorism arrests". And there is an E in sentence.
