IS PUTIN MAD, STUPID OR BOTH?

in apparently goading Trump into a new nuclear arms race.   Clearly he hasn't learned the lessons of history.   Last time round when Reagan faced off Brezhnev-Andropov-Chernenko it nearly bankrupted the then Soviet Union and was a factor in its collapse.

FFS, as at the beginning of last month Russia had 1796 operational nukes (out of an inventory of 7300) which more than matched the  USA's 1367 (from an inventory of 7100).    More than enough to end world civilization many times over.   Both countries need more nukes like they need holes in the head.

And that perhaps is what Putin has in his and Trump does himself no favors by responding to the challenge.   No Xmas present for either country.

Not really, he he will reach an agreement with the US administration to return to the cold war scenario where both sides realised that properly orchestrated public opinion kept the Kremlin leaders in business and kept the US military industrial complex in even more business..status quo.

After Khrushchev and Cuba the US and Soviet Union almost had a pact that verbal hostilities could ramp up fear and affect public opinion particularly when the US elections come round that would be beneficial to both sides. The hot line was was used for other things besides fending off a nuclear war.

Trump will talk tough, Putin will talk tough but as most of Putins close supporters have stuffed their ill gotten gains into western banks or western real estate (London) the chances of them taking out Buck House is zero.

Trump on the other hand does not have a hotel in London...........:-)

Hotel maybe not but one of 'them' on one of 'his' golf courses would sure make one of a hell of a big bunker.

As usual Veteran you are relying on what the Western media says VVP said and not what he said!

And what he said was Russia was in a position to defeat any aggressor and that Russia would do what was necessary to maintain that position

The USA has 200 modernized Nuclear weapons stationed in Europe and Russia has developed the response to deal with them - this was said at the same event by Sergei Shoigu

Vladimir Putin is neither mad nor stupid - he is doing what the Russian people elected him to do and that is to protect their interests, which is more than you can say for the Western leaders, like Cameron, Obama and Merkel who have sold their people down the river and trashed their nations

Best blog post/comment I've read all year.

Andrei ... got your time-line wrong. Putin started this off on Wednesday. Trump responded. Your quote is from Putin's Friday press conference. Both leaders should grow up. Russia's economy is teetering. If they enter into an arms race with the US they will loose big time.

Quite so Vet. Half of Russia's income is derived from the sale of oil and gas.

Trump is not a fool. He knows the easiest way to defeat Putin is to tank the international oil market and cut off Putin's money supply.

No money = no nukes.

Funny thing about Cameron, Obama, Merkel and Hollande is they made it to the top without intimidating or buying out the media, murdering an opposition leader or wrestling a bear topless. Not to mention Putin Youth, the teenage rabble who intimidate all who displease and a huge and growing troll army.

That people you keep trotting out this aggressor nonsense merely show that they have no idea of the logistics behind an invasion, NATO does not have the capability or the will or in fact the permission of 29 governments to invade any country.

The tough talk on nukes is a blind. There are enough missiles at sea in the US, British and French navies to make all land based systems redundant.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union the US found itself without an "enemy"and the Military/industrial money go round came to a halt, the "war on terror" did not really cut it, I now see a resurrection of the induced fear that kept people in power and money lining the pockets of the elite....only Putin/Trump can save us from the barbarians 'cos they are tough.

Flinko....if you do not know what you are talking about please keep quiet...Russia supplies a very large percentage of European natural gas and Siberia has barely been touched. If you think that the EU is going to plunge itself into darkness to please the Orange one then you are as deluded as Troll Andrei.

It would be good to see Putin at the Trump inauguration. Another combined effort to tell China to behave .
