ANOTHER SUPPOSEDLY BUSINESS FRIENDLY LABOUR MP BAILS OUT

The news that Clayton Cosgrove is to quit politics either before or at the next election is a sign that one of the supposed hard-men in the Labour caucus is not overly confident that Labour can win under Andrew Little.

Be very clear ... Cosgrove is both ambitious and driven.   If he thought there was a realistic chance of a Labour/Greens/NZ First Government come the next election he would be hanging in there in the expectation that he would make it back into the Ministry.

Cosgrove is on the 'right' of the Labour caucus.   He is seen as business friendly and is a proponent of free trade although clearly that belief took second place to toeing the Little line.    Above all he is an hit-man in the 'Tammany Hall' tradition with the ability to make Trevor Mallard appear Saintly.

His departure will be welcomed by National as a further indication that Labour is moving further to the left.

p.s.   I wrote this before the TV1 Poll release at 6.00 pm and timed it for release tomorrow. I'm now bringing it forward.   Question ... who tipped off Clayton.

Well, that or a sign that Cosgrove is aware that his list placing under Little would most likely be humiliating, and he's not someone who relishes humiliation.

In view of Cosgrove's move the article on the NZ Electoral Survey on Kiwiblog makes for interesting reading. Perhaps Cos saw that first.
