ON THE BASIN RESERVE

New Zealand has some magnificent boutique cricket grounds ... Seddon Park Hamilton), Hagley Oval (ChCh), University Oval (Dunedin).

Last night I flew back to the BoI after 36 hours in the Capital and to/from the airport you drive past the Basin Reserve which some have described as the 'home of New Zealand cricket'.  Whatever, right now it is a disgrace.

While the ground proper is up to standard; while the practice facilities have been improved; while the trees surrounding the embankment make for a great ambience; the reality is that the public facilities are third-world.

The RA Vance Stand, 40 years old and desperately in need of a makeover;    The old No. 1 Stand condemned as an earthquake risk and disused and that's it.

The Basin could be so much better but unless the WCC and Cricket NZL get their act together its future as a test match venue must be suspect.

Please divorce this post from the train-wreck happening on on ground as I write this.

84 for 5?

As the late Graham Kennedy used to say on TV during the seventies:

Faaaaaaaark, said the crow.

Don't see why Wellington ratepayers should subsidise cricket.

Ross ... well, if they don't then Wgtn will lose its place as a test playing venue and that will have a commercial impact. Can you name any other city in NZL where sports grounds do not receive a Council subsidy in some way shape or form? FYI the Westpac Stadium received a $15m base funding loan from the WCC.

WCC has no money left. They spent it all on secret Greenie projects.

Cricket is regarded by them as a capitalist activity.

Adolf ... well they have enough left to subsidize Singapore Airlines $9 per passenger on the just announced Wellington to Canberra service expected to cost the ratepayer millions over the nest decade.

getting rid of the Payroll Tax (which so hits the poor) and the Corporation Tax (replacing it with a Texas style business turnover tax)

Well good!! sooner the better.

precisely.

again precisely. but you know wellington civil servant parasites who can't work any more in wellington have to be able to work in Canberra instead...

Trump would just nuke the place - while Parliament was in session. No-one would miss it.

he won't have to, one of the four major faults running under Wgtn will take care of that in the next 5 years..................and the BR.

It's really hard to respond to our good friend 'Angry Tory' intelligently but perhaps one should point out that NZL doesn't have a payroll tax or a corporation tax while asking Trump to nuke Wgtn might be considered a tad over the top ... although it gets over the problem of a new grandstand.
