DAVID CUNLIFFE GOING INDEPENDENT?

Former Labour Party leader  Cunliffe has many questionable qualities but one thing is certain ... he ain't stupid.    He now knows that having been shunted to the nether regions of their caucus there is zip, zero, chance of him ever being a Minister in a Labour/Greens/Winston First administration should New Zealand ever be so stupid enough to entrust them with the Treasury benches.

The best he can hope for is to Chair a minor Select Committee and to take his place as one the Government back bench 'cannon fodder' which, at best, is a thankless task and at worst, a recipe for mind-numbing boredom.    His ego won't allow him to be pitchforked into that role.   Further, he won't take the demotion lying down and the problem for Labour is that they think they have maneuvered him into a position where his only option is to go and and go quietly ... not sure that's necessarily right.

From all reports Cunliffe is a relatively good constituency MP and therein lies his ace card.   Clearly he sees himself as a Minister and, were he to resign the whip and brand himself as say Independent Labour or David Cunliffe Labour, that might well see him as a 2017 version of the 'Dunny' with the ability to act as a kingmaker and demand a seat at the cabinet table in return for his support. Certainly Labour, Labour (the sort of real deal) would be thinking twice about standing a candidate against him for fear of splitting the vote and allowing the National Party candidate to waltz through the middle remembering always that in 2014 National won the Party vote in New Lynn by over a 1,000 votes.

I repeat ... Cunliffe ain't stupid.   He has a massive ego and he's hurting and he's angry ... watch this space.

I can see him becoming a Mana Party politician.
Just look at his adviser and the company he keeps

The sooner we get real democracy back to NZ - the way it was designed to work - then we'll never have to worry about Grumpy Cat or Labour ever again.

NZ is supposed to be a free, capitalist, Dominion: communists, leftists, unionists, and the rest simply don't belong here, and certainly shouldn't be allowed anywhere near politics.

He has a massive ego...

That alone makes him a twat who should never be in charge of anything. Like the rest of them?

Maybe he has a massive ego. But he would be a very competent Labour government minister. Most on that front bench are next to useless, but not Cunliffe.

Nick ... the problem for C is that he will never be a Labour government minister ... unless he takes matters into his own hands.
