THE NASTY SIDE OF POLITICS

I am the first to agree that politics is not for the faint hearted.   I expect passion from both sides of the political divide.   That's how it should be.

But I fail to see why passion should be an excuse for the shear nastiness we see from some posters on the extreme right and left of politics.    I'm a committed centre/right voter and tribal National (even though my father was a Labour activist).   But given all that I can at least acknowledge that many on the left side of the political divide are equally sincere in their opinions honesty held.

I guess that my co-blogger Psycho Milt and I will seldom sing from the same songsheet (Syria excepted) but he argues his case logically and with passion without resorting to abuse.  I respect him for that.

But partisans like Edward the Confessor and Holden from the left and Redbaiter from the right leave me cold.   For them it's black and white and no middle ground and no respect for the other side that they might just have a legitimate point of view to be considered.

I guess I agree with my political science professor in his view that there is very little difference between the extreme right and the extreme left in politics.   Both are authoritarian; both are intolerant of divergent opinion; none of them espouse a society I would want to live in.

Stalin and Hitler ... spot the difference, I can't.

With respect, I didn't think there was any difference. They were both Socialists, from the totalitarian left.

The difference between Reagan and Hitler is marked, or Stalin and Thatcher.

Only someone who knows nothing of history, philosophy or politics could think that, George.

As for Vet's post, I simply point out when you're in error (which is often) and respond to abuse in kind but with reason. Thanks for the smear though.

Redbaiter is one of the very few on the right that is able to coherently state his position. A position often well right of where National once was and should still be.

Unfortunately your beloved Nats have chosen to sit on the fence being closet socialists whilst chasing votes.

Vet, you may like living a society full of bludgers, the unfit for employment workshy, politicians that want to tax the productive to death and a judiciary hell bent on doling out soft sentences for those that do not follow the law. I certainly do not.

Like Red, my worldview demands black and white respect for authority with punishments to fit. There is zero room for namby-pamby emotive and subjective claptrap espoused by socialists. Even less for the rabid greenie communists further to the left.

People need to harden up and get on wit their own lives.

See now there's a wanker and a retard. That's simply objective fact. He's one of yours of course Vet.

EtC, don't stop there. Go on to explain my ignorance of history philosophy and politics. Explain how Communist socialism and National Socialism are hard left and hard right.

Explain why you think they're the same, with reference to their antecedents, origins and fundamental principles. You're the one making the silly assertion. Please, enlighten us.

Lets start by leaving out the nationalism and go to the commonalities. Totalitarian leadership and a lack of democratic opposition; a command economy with the means of production either stolen by the government or limited to producing what the government wants; wage and price control; draconian penalty for anything considered against the state [anti-social];a legal code replaced by rules; an unaccountable police repression of all opposition; the nullification or subjection of religious groups to state aims; propaganda ministries to divert the populace from actually thinking about why things are going down the drain. In short the elevation of the state over the individual, the so-called common good of society, socialism.

Shallow, George, shallow. You can't ignore nationalism, it's a key tenet of fascism, not Marxism.

Even your short list of supposed "commonalities" is wrong. The truth is fascists have far more in common with Tony Abbott than Marx. They fundamentally reject notions of equality, use state power and violence to favour their group (often based on race), support the private ownership of the means of production which they use to reward their chums and oppress everyone else. They're thus fine with massive disparities in wealth and power. Just like you in fact.

EtC 6.36 ... wrong. The British Fascists with their notion of the 'Corporate State' (and remembering they grew out of the Labour Party) were a movement that had far more in common with the extreme left than the extreme right.

As for your stupid attempt to link Abbott with fascist ideology and that is a perfect example of the point of my post. Over the top rhetoric does your cause no good at all and neither would it help mine if I were to claim that the NZ Labour owed more to communist ideology than to socialism.

Vet, you must forgive young Eddie the Con.

He only ever listens to the ABC.

EtC @6.36 - seems like you are continuing to link the totalitarian left and so called right. Did communist Russia, China, and Nth Korea all value equality so highly there was no political favouritism? Those are some very heavily tinted rose coloured glasses you have.

Like all trolls, Eddie the Con has learned all the big impressive big words in political studies classes.

Had he ever met a real Nazi he would have shit himself.

Well, true. He's really demonising people and creating division for political purposes, not for reasons of political philosophy, so in a way he's worse because he should know better. I stand corrected.

Anyway you started it by comparing people to Hitler.
