Put It In Context Pulease.

                  James C. "Jesse" Owens 1913 - 1980.

The media are lauding Micheal Phelps for extending his collection of Olympic Gold Medals to 19.

Don't get me wrong it is a tremendous achievement but how many would Jesse Owens have  won in Berlin in 1936 had he been able to run forwards, backwards, sideways, eyes shut, one leg hopping then do it all again with 3 mates in relays as teams doing like,  then again in medleys plus long and triple jumping.
Sheesh maybe around a dozen at the one games, as it was he won 4,  a feat not repeated till Carl Lewis.

Maybe not as poor old Adolf  and his racist mates might have been forced by their maniacal belief in Aryan superiority to have put a stop to it. What ole Jesse did must have been a bit troubling  as it was eh.

Then again they did didn't they by invading Poland in Sept 1939 they skittled any chance for Jesse in, was it London 1940 and even wherever in 1944.
We will never Know. He would have been 31 years old.

So Phelps could and still can swim, big deal but swimming is made for multiple medal opportunities.

I played sport well into my 40s.

I played to provincial level.

Gold medals = 0.

For mine, 19 ain't bad.
