`The high food prices are because of the rip off supermarkets. They don't mind ripping people off. They over charge families and don't mind one bit.' Unattributed.

We are selective at what we buy at a supermarket hence we are selective as to which one we choose.
Caveat Emptor. At a very mature age we are selective as to specials and where.
Why is it suggested that only families get "ripped" off. I followed a pretty young woman and child with a trolley full to the brim with crap food and she shelled out $560 without a murmer.
We too are selective and we buy almost all of our fruit and veges from a road side shop operated by friends - cheaper and fresher. Meat is almost always from the Mad Butcher.
However, for all other groceries we go to New World Hastings almost exclusively. They are slightly dearer but we know where everything is, we know a number of staff and they pack into bags.
We avoid Pak and Save like the plague.
If you can buy milk at the Indian cornershop and petrol stations for 40% cheaper than the supermarkets I'd say the HB writer might have a point.. at least for some items.
