Some Cyclists Are Idiots

In recent times there have been many letters to the Editor and articles by feature writers in the Hawkes Bay Today about how motorists ignore cyclists and endanger their lives. Once in a while someone writes in and sticks up for motorists asI do so now with this post..

This morning I took mrs pdm to work - she starts at 6am - in Havelock North. As we entered the round-a-bout in the middle of Havelock North from Hastings Road at about 5.55am a cyclist without any visible lights and in mainly dark clothing came hurtling the wrong way through the round-a-bout off Te Mata Road and on to the Hastings Road across the front of me. Lucky for him (I think it was a male aged 35/40) I had almost come to a stop as I was about to enter the round-about or he could have been plastered over my bonnet.

When cyclists do stupid things like that it means they get little sympathy from me when they write letters of complaint about motorists to the paper and they tarnish all of the sensible cyclists..

Yeah well, I was out cycling at 7am this morning, but in Auckland so it wasn't me!

But you're right. The 95% of cyclists who obey the road rules and treat cars as a death wish get completely undermined by the 5% who ride like complete morons, just to complete their journey, or do their training, only a few minutes quicker. Madness.

Nick I actally wonder what this guy was thinking biking between Havelock North and Hastings, in the dark in black clothing. I saw him again on my way home and he was hard to pick up even though I was on the look out for him.

He would be protected by his "Cone of Smug" and therefore be invulnerable.

"95% of cyclists who obey the road rules"?

Bullshit!

Not all cyclists are bad but a very large percentage are simply cycle scum.

Much more often than not cycle scum obey only the laws they feel like at the time, abusing those who pay for the bloody roads at every opportunity.

pdm, your encounter is similar to those I have almost daily on the streets of Paradise, a very large number of cycle scum expect motorists to both know what they are going to do (without input from the cycle scum) and avoid them.

Near misses are always, without fail, the motorists fault.

more like 95% not obeying the law!

It is very rare in Auckland to see cyclists obey the road rules. It's all about them - red lights don't apply to them. They've been blessed by the greenie religion. Bad news for the poor pedestrian trying to cross at lights to have cyclists miss them by inches. Or the car driver held up by someone who jumps the queue and slowly crawls away.

And even the weekend recreational cycle packs are gettign worse - 4-5 a breast - and the pack will just keep going through a red light.

Suck it up roadhogs....suck it up.

I always stop for red lights. And I always respect the motorist.

Can't say the same for you two, by the sound of it.

You could replace "cycle" with "motorist" in that paragraph and it would be about as accurate.

PDM: you saw a cyclist breaking road rules. That tells us nothing about cyclists. I see motorists breaking road rules every time I'm on the road, but people aren't collectively responsible for individuals' bad behaviour so it tells me nothing about motorists in general.

anon people - how about nicknames so we can tell if you are the same person or if a new commenter has entered the fray.

pm - are you suggesting my heading should read - A Cycling Idiot?

I'm a cyclist and a motorist. And I see on a weekly basis both motorists and cyclists letting their respective "sides" down.

Conclusion: It doesn't matter what mode of transport you are on, clear signaling, appropriate positioning and courtesy to other users are all things EVERYONE needs to be thinking about as they use the road.

I would re open Auschwitz if they promised to deal to fucking cyclists as top priority...

If you are gonna ride a cycle around Auckland for say 20 yrs then over this time period there is a good chance some retard in a car is going to injury you.

Be careful out there.

Anon @ 11.37 has it exactly right (although I haven't observed the 5 abreast he/she mentions, my main experience has been at intersections). There are relatively few cyclists compared with motorists, but the %age who flout the law is significantly greater (yes, that's only an opinion, but one based on years of observation). My guess is that 75% of cyclists flout the law (and put themselves at risk) compared with maybe 10% of motorists. Perhaps it's 50%/20%, but the point is the ratio is quite different.

Nick K, your response is exactly the response I expect from cycle scum.

1) Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men.

2) Conservation of momentum is the most important thing.

Tinman, NEWS FLASH - it's not YOUR road!!

"Us" cyclists allow you to use it provided you don't kill us!

One dick cyclist past me at the lights in Newtown Wgtn. Me waiting for the lights to change, this fuckwit had a cup of coffee in one hand and the other hand behind his head, the fuckwit was wobbling along the street but he was in his own little world, the planet crypton.
