SERIOUS QUESTIONS

I seriously question the 'integrity' of the New Zeland media. OK, perhaps an oxymoron.

So some freelance journo snaps a shot of a couple of NZSAS guys in Kabul at the time that a couple of ragheads set out on their mission to f**k 77 virgins. He wouldn't have a clue who a very hairy Willie Apiata VC, was.

Back in dear old NZ Granny Herald somehow makes the connection and publishes the photo identifying Apiata.

You bastards have just made Apiata a high value target for the Talaban. Proud of it?

The PM and the military are right to condemn this abuse of process by the Herald under the guise of media freedom because you can bet your bottom dollar that the haters and wreckers in this country; the John Minto's and the Keith Locke's of this world, will have sent the photo back to their Talaban friends along with a donation for the first guy to take him (Apiata) out.

Media puke.

I thought the DomPost was the culprit. This morning they go one better, printing a close up shot with his name alongside. They have given awaya the useful fact that these 'special' troops wear full beards.

It's time for urgent legislation to ban the publication of any details of military units not approved by the military itself.

Freedom of the press is a privilege not a right and when abused, the privilege should be denies.

you are right veteran - the issue is that they have identified Apiata VC as being in Kabul - it wasn't the photographer who was at fault - it was the Herald for publishing identifiable pictures

If this man is compromised in his security ensuring our safety so we dont have to pick up a SA80 to defend ourselves, then Flickoff, Locke, and Minto can get their camo gear on and go and do his job for him...... The NZ Herald should get a 5.56 through their front window to let them know they have severely stuffed up this guys security.

These actions of the MSM are all about their declining advertising revenues.

They are prostituting our VC recipient for financial gain. End of story.

It makes me sick!

Freedom of the press is a right, not just a privilege. But with rights come responsibilities, and no one would argue that this was responsible journalism.

I agree with democracymum that financial gain seems to have got the better of the editorial brain.

As for what any of this has to do with politicians and activists of the left, I'm stumped. It was a stupid editorial decision by a stupid editor.

You degrade your otherwise valid complaint veteran, with your ideological sidebar.

Richard ... it's quite simple. I honestly believe there are those in NZ so f****d up with their thinking that they would have no hesitation in alerting 'the enemy' that there was a high value target out there worth pursuing.

Prince Harry was brought back from Iraq quick smart once the media blew the gaff on him being there.
Why do you think that was?

Apiata ... same, same.

What we really needed was Willie and the other guy brought home to deal to Minto's mob at the tennis :)

I agree with you, but this..

because you can bet your bottom dollar that the haters and wreckers in this country; the John Minto's and the Keith Locke's of this world, will have sent the photo back to their Talaban friends along with a donation for the first guy to take him (Apiata) out.

..is fucking uncalled for. Please say you don't mean it.

The Veteran said...

For Danyl M ... yours too but then I expect nothing better from you.

Stephen ... I stand by what I said. See my previous post.

Much like the war I was involved in where the hard left of the protest movement here raised money in aid of the Viet Cong.

Well unfortunately I think you will lose your "bottom dollar" because to suggest that Locke or Minto or "their ilk" (to paraphrase) would actively conspire in something like that is just fucking retarded.

Shame on you.

I hate to put the cat among the pidgeons or cause alarm and despondancy The time for bickering has past and the reality is that a fatwa may already be in place and a 'clinic' may be assembling. You may think this a lot of humbug research war history and find out that this has been happenning against Special Forces personnel( throughout the world since their conception) who have actively fought against any islamic group bethey rebles terrorist or an organised army

Always good to hear from someone who can't assemble a half-decent sentence, or even spell "pigeon"...

Stephen, the truth doesn't always have to come with correkt speeling.

A Fink - you prove exactly why the Herald & DomPost SHOULD have published the photos - to prevent the police state you would have us live under.

It's time for urgent legislation to ban the publication of any details of military units not approved by the military itself.

Riiiiight. Gestapo much? So the military gets to decide what we (the public who pay the SAS, and sanction their right to kill) know about their actions?

So the military then decide our foreign policy, which nations we declare war on, and peace.... heck, why not let them run Treasury too? Oh, they will have to, so they can fund their clan-ops without the nasty Kiwi public knowing.

Glad to see you think before typing.

Freedom of the press is a privilege not a right and when abused, the privilege should be denies.

Aren't you a journo? Maybe you should have your quote in bold font on your desk, so all your colleagues can be inspired by your dedication to the field of journalism.

Siiigh. FWIW, no-one outside NZ would ever have known who Apiata was if Key had shut up - the Taliban don't randomly scan all photos on the net looking for bearded soldiers to capture. And there is a public interest in knowing the Key and defence forces are lying to us about their actions, claiming Kiwi troops weren't directly involved in the battle when they were.

Ever stop to think about the freedoms those soldiers are supposed to be defending?
