Where the feck were the LAVs

New Zealand soldiers were ambushed by the Taliban while they were in vehicles like these. I have posted previously on my new found respect for the LAV's and this would surely be the place to use them.

That as they say is a very good question and one that merits a full and frank answer. Alas by the time the softcocks at Def HQ realise the quality of that question and the ramifications of such a massive change in utilization of the defense assetts the towel heads will have shut down for the winter. Meanwhile the brains trust at H Q are still devoting most of their strategic planning at H Q to preventing a repetition of the deplorable act of crass stupidity where some misguided junior ranks wrote an inappropriate messages on ordnance intended as an indicative inducement favoring a change in the behaviour of the great Jihadists fighting for the right to continue the wonderful peaceful religion of Islam. You know the one that subjugates women, indoctrinates the young, works to destroy all the religions of the false prophets and Israel, actively pursues the acquiring of Nuclear weapons and attacks democracy throughout the world.

Yeah, that religion. You know what I can't figure out; why all red-blooded males haven't signed up for it yet. I mean, you get to have more than 1 wife and they can be 14 year old virgins, and when they get to old and saggy or naggy you can dump them without losing half the house. And you can have sex with animals, and you get more virgins every day when you die, and all women know their place. No more backchatting, no more politicians, no more woman earning more than the lowest paid man. And if they do get a bit stroppy they get the bash and the lash and all condoned by Government and the courts. And let's not forget what happens to the pooftahs. The chutney ferrets get hung and not in a good way if you know what I mean. And lets quickly mention the sensible sentencing laws - talk about a hand-for-a-hand justice. And all the religious holidays that I get paid time off for, brilliant. Me, I converted ages ago. Gotta love this religion of peace and tolerance. And if anyone messes with my religion I blow them the f*^k up.

Sage:

HQ NZDF did not authorise deployment of LAVs to Afghanistan because the Army brass felt that they did not "suit the terrain." You may remember that over at kiwipolitico this was one of my objections to the large scale LAV purchase in the first place--that it was unsuited for several environments in which NZDF personnel operate. Your link in the comments and subsequent debate led me to believe that perhaps the US versions had been upgraded to the point that they could handle a number of scenarios for which they were not originally designed (e.g. close quarter urban combat). I now wonder if they are being employed in Afghanistan. I know that Bradleys, Humvees and new minesweeping APCs are deployed as are some Abrams tanks, but off the top of my head do not recall the LAV being deployed there. Which is to say, perhaps the NZDF are worried about IEDs rather than the type of small arms and RPG fire that a LAV could handle (such as in this case). Judging from the photos you use and others supplied by the NZDF, the terrain seems transitable with the LAV so something else must factor into the equation not to deploy them.
