Free shuttle to airport

I say "Let them go"

If the world owes them a living, let the world provide it.
Greener grass on the other side of the fence is really only for cows and sheep.
But, I guess many political and social science lecturers would fall into that category anyway.

All that increasing the number of people going to university has ever acheived is the devaluation of graduate degrees...

More must mean worse
Frankly I like WIlliam Hague's education policies: no fees and a generous living allowance - for Oxford, Cambridge and London.

Anywhere else, full fees and no support whatsoever.

In fact- we coiuld apply exactly the same thing here.

For say the top 1000 students - choose Oxford. Cambridge, or one of the good US ugrad schools.

For the rest...

This govt already signaled pretty clearly that it just doesn't rate research and development, so this news isn't really any surprise. They can rely on the native anti-intellectualism of NZers to ensure they don't suffer for it in the polls, but it is kind of weird to have a govt with ambitions to make NZ even more backward.

There is no need to be ignorantly stupid.

Valuing research and development has very little to do with universities.

Exclusivity is what makes striving for a good education worthwhile. If you get it as an alternative to the dole (and let's face it, you don't get the same quality of parties on the dole,) it will never be exclusive.

I'm irate, yes! I met a 26 year old waitress with a Law Degree this week - said she couldn't be bothered with the study to do proffs and having to wear a suit every day.

Tell that to Fonterra. Or any number of very successful business that have based their success of R&D coming from Universities.

"If you get it as an alternative to the dole" Don't know how you get to that since you get more money on the dole.

God, I never realised what luddites the right are. Who cares about research, science and learning? Where's that ever got anyone? With that sort of attitude it's little wonder our productivity growth rates are so low.

Hmm. 19 Million extra for the marsden fund? Sounds like support for research.

Given that most of the tripe that passes for higher education these days is leftist tripe, good riddance.
