Adolf Gets It Wrong - Twice

Prior to the last election, Adolf had the view that Murray McCully was pretty much a lame duck monument to history (never trust anyone with an undershot jaw) and Phil Goff was a beacon of rectitude and ability amongst the foggy morass of Parliamentary Labour.

So far, I have been proven wrong on both counts. McCully has performed extremely well, as documented by Fran O'Sullivan in this morning's Herald. What a difference he makes when compared with his predecessor.

"This is a return to normality after the embarrassing charade played out under the Labour Government when its Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, sat outside the Cabinet and not only "didn't do trade", but reserved the right to oppose deals like the Chinese free trade agreement which did not fit with his party's agenda."

He has begun altering the culture of MFAT by insisting that aid money be tied to the best interests of New Zealand rather than the well being of leather arsed desk pushers in foreign capitals. The culture will change finally only when he chops off a few senior heads.

And now, what of Filk Off?

He really is the invisible man and when he occasionally sticks his head up it is to make some inanely stupid remark attacking something or other NACTionlMP is doing but with which sixty percent of the populace approves.

Well, good on ya Adolf - but can you explain briefly, to those of us who had Phil Goff tagged right from the beginning (as another Jim McClay), why you ever thought that? I'm interested :)

What he has actually begun is decreeing what NZ's foreign aid programmes will be based on whatever he feels like at the time, which should get him the sack for not knowing what his job is. What he's also begun is a message to other govts that NZ foreign aid is no longer about alleviating poverty in the Third World but about subsidising NZ companies - and having started that, if the big players decide to join us who's gonna come off worst? Stupid, stupid, stupid. What he's also begun is a message to Pacific countries that NZ is out for itself, and if they want actual aid money they'd better go talk to China. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Now that I think about it, I was actually being overly generous calling him a discredited sack of shit.

Milt, you really are a silly boy. Do your for a moment seriously think that China gives aid money with no strings attached? Do you want to continue a regime wherein $1.75 million of a $1.95 million aid contribution is spent on 'administrative overheads?"

No I don't believe China gives foreign aid with no strings attached Adolf, that's exactly why I think McCully's such a moron for effectively telling Pacific countries that if they want foreign aid they'd better rely on China.

I agree we don't want most of our aid money going on admin costs, but if the alternative is Murray McCully just deciding for himself what money's going to be used where, frankly I think it's the lesser of two evils.
