The auditor-general is investigating Work and Income's handling of sickness and invalid beneficiaries, amid MPs' concerns that the growing caseload is being mismanaged.
Can Liarbour get anything right?
Update: David Farrar at Kiwiblog notes a DomPost story on druggies and alcoholics who can claim extra benefits as sick but do not have to attend treatment courses.
It's not just the administration of policy at fault, but policy itself.

And I wonder how the recently announced further dumbing down of categories under a single core benefit will aid this investigation?
Liarbore has been a total failure on welfare.
Here we see mismanagement of the system, which has brought the attorney general in.
We see misanagement of policy, which seems to be driving everyone to drugs and drink, because of the pay off.
And yes PM of NZ, Liarbore bringing in the single benefit to hide such abuses and help prevent the necessary debate this country needs to have on welfare.
Liarbore is the bludgers party.

Mostly, but not entirely. There is nothing in the Code of Health and Disability Rights which prevents WINZ staffers making beneficiaries get treatment as part of their benefit if they think it is in the best interest of the incompetent consumer. Furthermore, its about time that we had legislation stating that it is the best interests of all such addicts, and similar people in receipt of a benefit that they are required to get treatment, or lose their benefit. They still have a choice as to whether they should accept treatment, but if they decline treatment, they can kiss goodbye to a benefit in exactly the same way that you can't access financial assistance as a student if if you don't pass half the previous year's papers.
