As a schoolboy on a Tuesday lunchtime I often used to sneak into the Rural Science department where they would have a radio playing.
And Tuesday lunchtime meant the latest official BBC Radio One Top 40 would be broadcast.
Who'd be Number One? I'd be so excited.
A year or two later, I grew out of it and now I give the music charts barely a thought. Well, I am 40 so what do you expect!
Instead, as a player, I follow the blog charts nowadays, so like a schoolboy again, I was waiting with baited breath earlier this week for the official chart from Tumeke!
Alas, here we are at the end of the weekend, the 8th of June, and still no blog chart for last month. So for all you pop-pickers, out there, I have rustled up a simple chart based solely on Alexia rankings, nothing more. I also just checked the rankings of those in the official top 20 last month, so I haven't accounted for any high new entres, if there are any.
Well, I will provide three charts, so you bloggers can pic the one you like best.
Some blogs like Poneke, Not PC and Frogblog have a strong overseas readership. No Minister did until it seems the Chinese government lost interest in our postings.
There also seems to be major discrepencies between the placings of some blogs on these rankings, such as Russel Brown (pictured right) and his Public Address, which apparantly has a lower Alexia ranking for New Zealand than No Minister! Yay!
Other left-wing blogs such No Right Turn and Kiwiblogblog seem higher placed in the Tumeke! chart than based on simple Alexia rankings.
And on a weeky basis there can be some severe fluctuations, as I have noted with an almost daily watch of No Minister's Alexia rankings.
So who are the movers and shakers? David Farrar (pictured left) and Kiwiblog still remains the nation's favourite, maintaining a strong and consistent lead. But boobs and guns seems to have been a hit for Whale Oil with him closing in on the past week.
Not PC, The Standard and the Hive are also growing strongly. And after some fluctuations, No Minister seems to have overtaken Poneke. Frogblog has also shot up , probably due to the Green Party conference. Last week, Cactus Kate returned back into the Alexia top ten.
But of course, how we might all fare in the official Tumeke! chart remains to be seen. So let us hope Tim and co at Tumeke! can deliver one soon.

Oh fuck I am SO happy.
Wake me up when they rank us on profitability.
I am thinking we need more naked Helen to boost my readership!!
The Alexa rankings are based on how many people who have the Alexa toolbar installed have visited your site. Do you have Alexa installed? Do you know anybody who does? This is why their statistics jump around a lot - they are basically worthless.
I don't argue with what you say Dimpost.
I was just seeking a quick and simple chart until the 'official Tumeke!' chart comes out.
That will be obviously far better as it includes other factors.
But even just taking simple Alexia ratings, it was a little time consuming.
So it is a tribute to the Tumeke! team for doing what they have done.
And by calling them the 'official' chart, also recognition of this as well.
The lefties just cannot believe it
that no-one is listening any more
who is not on the governmetns payroll!
I just can't wait
for Cactus Cate, Farrah, and Rodney Hide on Fox New Zealand --- rather than Russel Brown et al on TVNZ 7.
Best of all, no more tax dollars to lefties! ever!
great post but why the picture of Dr Evil?
That is a rather cruel decription of Russell Brown, BB.
Perhaps he needs a shave.
But anonymous, it is interesting to see the right taking a lead in the blogosphere.
Certainly TVNZ needs to see who is more in tune with he masses.
Its current stable, including Russell Brown, or should it have a new team featuring David Farrar, Whale Oil and maybe Adolf.
Now, it might seem nasty suggesting a threat to Russel's inome but I have seen the left going for Whale Oil and David Farrar.
They recently noted David did the recent Family First survey and made it look untoward.
They also complained to Rabobank, successfully getting an ad removed from Whale Oil and they have made allegations about Whale Oil's former business activities.
The left are playing extremely dirty in tryin to undermine New Zealands top two bloggers, bloggers whose success are determined by rating, the number of people who log intro their sites. In other words, the popular vote.
No not catweazel. The folically challenged guy is definitely Dr Evil..
No, I am sure it is David.
I found the picture on The Standard.
And they said it was he.
It's Alexa - not Alexia!
I am still working my way down through the list now and aiming for completion before Friday.
There was over thirty new blogs to add and more besides awaiting a perusal. A lot of parliamentary candidates are putting up blogs over the last few months and that number will only grow as we approach e-day. Their popularity though remain fairly small - being seen as facebook type must-haves that are viewed as modern necessities, but are not given any time or treated diligently by their authors. They will no doubt disappear immediately the election is over, eg. Tim Barnett's.
As for Alexa... the 3 month period evens things out. I may be over-scoring it because I think that if bloggers see they are under estimated by Alexa they will send me a screen grab of their stat counter, while those over-counted will not. I have given a little thought to reducing the assumed traffic (Alexa) a bit so as to encourage reporting; but will not do so for this survey. It's under consideration.
PS: thanks for the nag. It's one of the few times it does actually help.
Thanks Tim
This is much appreciated.
You have gained yourself an official role.
Keeper of the official blog chart in New Zealand.
This role will, of course, be some help in raising the profile of Tumeke! as well.
Certainly it makes me visit Tumeke! more often than I did before.
Now, as No Minister is a few places lower in your chart, why is this?
Is there something we are doing wrong?
Perhaps we don't link to enough other blogs?
How can we or anyone else gain a higher ranking?
Thanks Tim and everyone will look forward to your official chart.
I understand it is a timely exercise gathering all the info and it is much appreciated.
All the best
Darren
Certainly TVNZ needs to see who is more in tune with he masses.
So - did you hear Kathryn Ryan on Radiosocialism at about 9am this morning
ask David "woodfires" Parker if NZ was still a first-world country
She sure wants to keep her job come November:
pity that this won't help her one bit!
should it have a new team featuring David Farrar, Whale Oil and maybe Adolf.
hell yeah!
Now, it might seem nasty suggesting a threat to Russel's income
No socialist should have an income.
Especially not one paid by taxpayers.
The sooner Rodney Hide as manager of state services issues a new conflict of inflict ruling
removing all socialists and greenies from government the better the country will be!
So Russell Brown is acclaimed as some national celebrity when he is has fewer readers than Adolf, Fairfacts, PM, Gooner and co?
Let's get them all on the telly interrogating Dear Leader, Cullen and co.
Your survey should certainly put the cat among the pidgeons.
Do keep it up updated regulalrly so we can see how the Public Address farce contains to claim so much popularity.
There certainly needs to be some explanations how Public Adress does as well in the 'official' chart, even beating Whale Oil.
Let's have Cameron taking over TV7!
He did a fine job with his Rodney interview.
Perhaps thats also where his talents lie.
