How could you?

The mother of murdered Dunedin woman Sophie Elliott has told of seeing her daughter stabbed repeatedly.

The Dunedin District Court today heard Sophie Elliott died after being stabbed 216 times.

Just in case you missed that - 216 times. Yes, two hundred and sixteen times.

I am a big fan of degrees if murder and if this was law then this nutjob wouldn't be seeing the light of day again.

Does anybody know whether his legal aid lawyer is attempting the insanity excuse?

If I see someone getting stabbed and the police turn up and see the stabber stabbing his victim as well - why do we need a trial????

BB - what else would you argue?

Anon - precisely!

I think it would be hard to plea anything but insanity Gooner. I was astonished when I heard that number today. irrespective of the plea or his mental health I think we have a poster boy for a death penalty referendum.
Very attractive white victim murdered by jealous whack job who was her tutor.. It would be an ideal case to argue for a reintroduction. Would stop the likes of Willie jackson and Bomber shrieking about us wanting to execute nonwhites..

Nahh, I don't agree with killing because you killed. Life with no parole. That'll do for me.

I believe there is certainly room for us to debate the death penalty for the most heinous crimes. This fits my criteria.

I think the fact they're not saying where he stabbed her speaks volumes for his state of mind. Still, insane or not, the thought of him ever being released doesn't appeal.

Evil looking mad brute.
Where was he stabbing her?

I'd be tempted to hang the fucker.
But I'd torture him first.
Chop bits off here and there, everywhere.

This absolutely confirms my suspicion; it is a fine-line between sociopath and academic.

Why a referendum?? I really, really don't understand why people are so keen on referenda and commissions.

The National party is already campaigning on increasing police powers. Once in government, it should simply arm the police. Ideally, I'd go further, so that trustworthy police can be credentialled as investigating magistrates, with the power to investigate, compel testimony, adjudicate the sentence and in cases like this, enforce it.

So if an armed investigating magistrate finds someone who's stabbed someone 216 times, or parents of kids who were based to death, or P-dealers, or recidivist drunk drivers, or rifle-toting terrorists, or seditious protestors: they can deal with them then and there. permanently.

Hmmm, just like the Mteropolitan Police Service dealt with that Brazilian Electrician?

Mate, due process is what protects us from abuse of power.

(ps anyone remeber that elderly/middleaged Scottish tourist who was dragged from a car and thrown to ground? He looked like some crim the Nizilind Pleece where looking for. he never quite recovered from the ordeal and died. Leaving behind grieving wife & family.)

Sometimes anon I suspect you are a socialist double-agent, given the absurd stuff eminating from your fingertips.

I've wondered that myself, Clunking Fist. He keeps in character very well though.

Without excusing anything (because, sane or insane, it's inexcusable), nobody seems to have picked up on why the girl would hang out with Mr.Nutjob in the first place; but if you read her own reported comments (and his) it was the usual low self-esteem... the same thing that sees separated/single/divorced mothers, desperate for a relationship, putting their kids at risk (remember Bruce Howse?).
